The book follows Benkos Biohó (recorded as Domingo Biohó) as he escapes enslavement, helps establish and govern the fortified palenque of La Matuna, engages in armed defense and uneasy diplomatic truces with Spanish authorities, and meets his tragic execution in March 1621—ultimately exploring the complex relationship between the colonial archive, collective maroon sovereignty, and later historical memory.
